_Battery-Operated Soul Machine
by : gadiv
device : free verse, meter turned Off
describe : There was a line in Kenickie's "Robot Song" that always stuck just right in my head, "But I'm not sad, believe me / Because I choose not to be" ... and then I thought about Star Trek and Lt. Data, and some other nerdy things, just wallowing in how sublimely utilitarian and sad it would be to just ... Turn Off.

I never have to worry
I never have to care
I can say "I'm sorry."
Without being there.
I can flip the switch
To detach from you
To dismiss you
You will never get to touch me
Until I let you
I have a Battery-Operated Soul Machine

I don't have to wish for you to
Change your ways
Change your mind
I don't have to soak my face
With every tear I cry
I can flip the switch to hide me
From your tongue
From your eyes
I can wait for you to find
The time to find the time
And then I'll turn on
And let you wear me down
Spin the gears and the cogs on my
Battery-Operated Soul Machine

Allow me to
sell you
on the virtues
My prosthetic soul
Like a lock on a door
Or the switch to a light
I can choose when to
Love you
Hate you
Be disappointed by
or disappoint you
I can nullify your why
Can mute your anything everything
Choose when you hurt me
When it hurts me to hurt you
Like a lock on a door
Or the switch to a light
I don't have to concern myself with you
Or any of the things you do
I can pick when I want to care
Choose my place my time
When to soak my face with every tear I cry
I can hide all the things I do
You do
To you
Until you use up my battery
And I can no longer care
Even when I want to
When I want to think about you
Love you or long for you
Miss you or mourn for you
When you eventually break me
Break my
Battery-Operated Soul Machine
And I will say "I'm sorry."
Without being there.
