__Boots?
I might also mention that I am rather dissatisfied with the evolution of the "tennis shoe" in American society. Tell me: why must footwear look like they're from space, and be so hideously, bizarrely colored? I think it is a scheme: shoe makers provide sports shoes to the American youth in colorations so bright and eye-catching that the police will be able to more easily see them in the dark of night. I mean, some of these shoes even light up!
It's all a trick, I suspect...
__Regarding Jean-Jacques Rousseau's Notions of
At some point a consciousness will develop a sense of ownership or a desire for property. At some point after that some consciousnesses will desire to own property without having to work for it and will seek to take property from those who worked for it. At some point after that other consciousnesses will want to protect themselves, their property, and their hard work by collecting themselves together for mutual benefit.
This chain continues until there are homes, settlements, city walls, laws, and enforcement.
Until there is a breed of consciousness that has sufficiently developed empathy to circumvent the second stage of that chain, the desire to unfairly exploit and steal from others, then all of this is Natural, and Rousseau wrote extensively about an impossible fantasy.
Civilization isn't the Bad Guy to begin with; it's all the garbage that humanity allows to come along for the ride.
__Regarding Primitivism in Art
Simplified forms, representational figures, a disinterest in perspective illusions and a satisfied state of art aesthetic do not suddenly become lesser or more basic works because there are centuries' worth of well-patroned Europeans who labored over their handful of Louvre wall-coverings.
"Primitive" is a term for technology, tools, and weaponry, not culture and art. The descriptor "primitivism" is even less effective in use and distinguishing art products than had objects been labeled instead with their culture of origin. Virtually all art and architecture outside of the European, Asian, and Middle Eastern areas, the cradles of human civilization, can be labeled singly as "primitive" as applied to their inspiration of works of "primitivism", though these various regions have distinct differences; consider Native American art, from totem poles to icons to architecture, against African wood sculptures and ceramics, and again against Latin American and South American art. Further, and more amusing, "primativism" occasionally taps into even Chinese and Japanese cultures with their plethora of mythologies, feudal art and sculpture, dragons, demons, and their highly-regarded ukioye and wood prints - yes, even the wood print! All of this serves to reinforce that, at its heart, "primitivism" only means "art inspired by non-white art" - but it is itself not "primitive" because it has been regurgitated through the cultured throat of a well-informed white artist.

It is very hard to find a good pair of very plain black leather boots. It is even harder to find a pair of very plain black leather boots at an affordable price.
Returning to the Natural
Rousseau was incorrect. Civilization is Natural when life achieves a certain level of self-awareness and consciousness.
Largely, "Primitivism" is a poorly selected word that implies a comparable lack of sophistication or quality to another culture's ideologies. It would not even feel like rampant political correctness for me to reduce the term to yet another graffito left by white and perfect western societies on history and art to further elevate and glorify their own canon of arts and aesthetics.
People seem to be getting out of touch with one another like never before, despite the new advances in
keeping-in-touch technologies, like the MySpaces and Facebooks on the internets, cellular phones, e-mail and
so on. Well, I can forgive e-mail, since spammers are single-handledly (well, thousands-handedly?) turning
the single most important advent in interpersonal communications into a devastating tedium. Forgive the
digression; to the point, we today are veritably brow-beaten by options and services to stay connected that
we're barely utilizing. I have a few friends from high school, for instance, that aren't sacks of
apathy that I would call up for a cup of coffee and some chat ... if I would call up for a cup
of coffee and some chat. Yes, hypocrisy rears its ugly head - I, too, barely make an effort. Sure, I'm
busy - anyone worth his bid on the oxygen supply keeps busy - but it's so little a time expenditure to say
something to someone. Say what? That's more the trouble. Plus, people change, people outgrow some people
- Lawdy, I know I have - but that complicates things even more. What if I've outgrown This Person? What if
I was outgrown by This Person? What if I say something and find out That Person is stuck in high
school? What if ... what if ...
I should probably get back to studying.
